Trusted bridal alterations guidance for your perfect fit

Finding your dream wedding dress is only the beginning of the journey. The final fit is what makes your gown feel truly yours. At The Bridal Affair, we understand how important expert bridal alterations are, which is why we are happy to guide our brides towards experienced, trusted seamstresses who regularly work with wedding dresses, bridal fabrics and detailed gown construction.

Whether your dress needs a simple hem, a bodice adjustment, strap alteration, bustle, sleeve refinement or more detailed customisation, a skilled bridal seamstress can help ensure your gown fits beautifully for your wedding day.

Bridal alterations after choosing your dress

Most wedding dresses require some level of alteration. This is completely normal. Bridal gowns are usually ordered to the closest standard size and then carefully fitted to your individual shape during the alterations process.

Your seamstress may adjust the bodice, refine the straps or sleeves, alter the hem to suit your wedding shoes, create a bustle for the train, improve the neckline or back fit, add a modesty panel, or make small custom changes to help the dress feel more personal to you.

A good bridal seamstress will always aim to preserve the original design and structure of your gown while making it feel secure, flattering and comfortable. The right alterations can make a beautiful dress feel like it was made just for you.

When should I book my wedding dress alterations?

We usually recommend beginning your bridal alterations around 8–12 weeks before your wedding date. This allows enough time for fittings, adjustments and final finishing without leaving everything until the last minute.

It is helpful to have your wedding shoes and any key underwear or shapewear ready for your fittings, as these can affect the hem length, posture and overall fit of your gown.

During busy wedding seasons, seamstresses can become booked up well in advance, so we always recommend contacting your chosen seamstress as soon as your dress has arrived or once you have a clear idea of your wedding timeline.

Recommended seamstresses

We are happy to recommend a small selection of trusted independent seamstresses who regularly support our brides and customers with bridal, prom and occasionwear alterations.

Each seamstress works independently from The Bridal Affair and will have their own availability, pricing, appointment process and fitting schedule. You will find our recommended seamstresses listed further down this page, where you can view their details and contact them directly.

We recommend contacting your chosen seamstress as early as possible, especially during busy bridal, prom and occasionwear seasons. This gives you the best chance of securing suitable fitting dates and allows enough time for any adjustments to be completed carefully.

Please speak to our team during your appointment or once your dress or outfit has arrived, and we will be happy to guide you towards suitable seamstress contacts.

Are alterations included in the price of my dress?

Alterations are not included in the price of your wedding dress unless specifically stated. This is because every bride, every dress and every alteration requirement is different.

Your seamstress will discuss your individual requirements with you and provide guidance on pricing, timings and the number of fittings needed. All alteration costs are arranged directly between you and your chosen seamstress.

Independent seamstress disclaimer

Our recommended seamstresses are independent businesses who work separately from The Bridal Affair.

While we are happy to recommend trusted contacts, all appointments, quotes, payments, timescales, fittings and final workmanship are arranged directly between the bride and the seamstress. The Bridal Affair is not responsible for alteration costs, availability, appointment scheduling or completed alteration work.

We always recommend contacting your chosen seamstress early, attending all agreed fittings, and bringing the correct shoes, underwear and accessories to help achieve the best possible fit.

Alterations for plus-size wedding dresses

At The Bridal Affair, we are proud to offer a beautiful range of bridal gowns in sizes 6–28, and we understand how important it is for every bride to feel confident, supported and comfortable in her dress.

A skilled bridal seamstress can help refine the fit of your gown so it supports your shape properly, sits comfortably and enhances the original design of the dress. Whether your gown has structure, lace, sleeves, straps, a full skirt or a fitted silhouette, the right alterations can make a significant difference to how your dress looks and feels.
